Founded in the ‘50s…. still thriving as a community today.

The Geelong Lithuanian Sports Club “Vytis” has been active in the Geelong community for 70 years and is a foundation member of Basketball Geelong where we are still competing. Although originally founded by migrant Lithuanians, we have a multicultural focus and are very inclusive of all nationalities.

In the early 1950’s, local migrant Lithuanians formed a basketball team known as “Wanderers”. In 1953 the sports club held its first meeting and A. Bratanavicius was duly elected as the first club President. In that year the club was known as “Neris”, however the following year the club name was changed to “Vytis” (Knights).

The club has had many great athletes, administrators and supporters involved over the years and continues to provide leadership and a conducive environment for community members to become involved in. At various times, the club has had many sporting sections including Basketball, Volleyball, Table Tennis, Tennis, Billiards, Chess and Golf.

We have basketball teams representing the club in the Geelong Domestic Basketball competition from juniors through to mens and womens senior teams in various divisions.

Apart from sporting activities, the club also conducts many social functions to maintain relationships and raise funds to support club operations. In 2013 and 2017 we competed as Geelong Vytis in the World Lithuanian Games held in Lithuania. Significantly, in 2017 our U16 Boys won the gold medal at the 2017 World Lithuanian Games.

The successes the club has achieved can be attributed to the dedication of the past and current committee members and supporters who dedicate their time to foster a truly inclusive “club” environment.
