CODES OF CONDUCT
These codes of conduct are based on those developed by Basketball Victoria to give participants a guide to the expectations of all participants. Full explanation of the Codes of conduct can be found on the Basketball Victoria website. These guidelines are developed to ensure we have an environment that is safe, supportive, and friendly for all involved.
Registration with the Vytis Knights basketball club is acceptance of these codes of conduct, please ensure anyone in attendance of training or games is aware of these codes of conduct.
PLAYER CODE OF CONDUCT
Understand and play by the rules.
Respect referees and other officials.
Control your temper.
Work equally hard for yourself and for your team.
Be a good sport.
Treat all players as you would like to be treated.
Play for the “enjoyment of it” and not just to please parents and coaches.
Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
Be prepared to lose sometimes.
Listen to the advice of your coach and try to apply it at practice and in games.
Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
Wear appropriate attire including footwear and bring water to each training and game.
If you aren’t able to positively participate in training or a game you will be asked to take a break until the coach agrees you are ready to return.
COACHES CODE OF CONDUCT
Remember that basketball is for enjoyment.
Be reasonable in your demands
Teach understanding and respect for the rules.
Give all players a reasonable amount of court time.
Develop team respect for the ability of opponents including their coaches.
Instill in your players respect for officials and an acceptance of their judgement.
Guide your players in their interaction with the media, parents and spectators.
Group players according to age, height, skills and physical maturity, whenever possible.
Ensure that equipment and facilities meet safety standards and are appropriate to the age and ability of the players.
Be prepared to lose sometimes.
Act responsibly when players are ill or injured.
As well as imparting knowledge and skills, promote desirable personal and social behaviours.
Keep your knowledge current.
Ensure that any physical contact with a player is appropriate.
Avoid personal relationships with players.
Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
As a coach you represent the club, ensure you always do so in a respectful manner and uphold the club’s good name.
Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
Ensure the safety of all players and ensure that appropriate attire and footwear is worn at all games and training sessions.
PARENT CODE OF CONDUCT
Encourage your children to participate for their own interest and enjoyment, not yours.
Encourage children to always play by the rules.
Teach children that an honest effort is always as important as a victory.
Focus on developing skills and playing the game. Reduce the emphasis on winning.
A child learns best by example. Applaud good play by all teams.
Do not criticise your or others’ children in front of others.
Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability.
Set a good example by your own conduct, behaviour and appearance.
Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from sporting activities.
Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
Show appreciation for volunteer coaches, officials and administrators.
Keep children in your care under control. This includes encouraging them to listen to their coaches at both games and training, and taking responsibility if they are not participating positively.
Under 14s and younger should have a responsible adult with them at training.
If children aren’t able to positively participate in training or a game they will be asked to take a break with their responsible adult, until the coach agrees they are ready to return.
Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
Ensure children attend games and training with appropriate attire, footwear and water to ensure their health and safety.
SPECTATOR CODE OF CONDUCT
Remember that most people play sport for enjoyment.
Accept decisions of all referees as being fair and called to the best of their ability.
Always be positive in your support for players.
Condemn the use of violence in any form.
Respect your team’s opponents, officials and spectators.
Encourage players to obey the rules and to accept decisions of officials.
Demonstrate appropriate social behaviour by not using foul language or harassing players, coaches or officials.
Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every person.
Keep children in your care under control.
Always respect the use of facilities and equipment provided.
Know that during a game penalties may be given to the team should your behaviour not be in line with Geelong United Basketball Rules and you may be asked to leave the stadium.
Reporting Inconsistent Behaviour
If you would like to report any breach of code of conduct or incident, please ensure you complete the incident report form or contact a club committee member as soon as possible to detail the incident via email - geelong.vytis@gmail.com
Players:
Any individual may report a player’s behaviour that is inconsistent with the code of conduct. Reports should be made first to the player’s coach and if unable to be resolved then it should be reported via the incident report form which will be submitted to the Vytis Knights Committee (Committee). The team’s coach or a committee member may address the issue through a face-to-face discussion or written communication. For junior players, any discussions must involve the parent/legal guardian, and the coach must inform the Committee.
Coaches, Parents/Legal Guardians, and Spectators:
Reports of behaviour inconsistent with the Code from coaches, parents, legal guardians, or spectators should be sent to the Committee via the incident report form.
Actions and Disciplinary Measures
In cases of repeated breaches or serious violations, at least 3 members of the committee will convene to review the report and determine appropriate actions. Possible actions may include:
Formal in-person discussion
Written warning
Removal from a Vytis Knights position
Suspension from a team for a specified period
Request to refrain from attending games/training for a period of time
Conditional participation requirements
Disbarment from the Vytis Knights Basketball Club
Subjects involved have the right to appeal disciplinary actions. Appeals must be submitted in writing to the Committee geelong.vytis@gmail.com within seven days.
